PCI Compliance
PCI compliance is an important aspect of credit card equipment and card processing in general. PCI (Payment Card Industry) regulations are designed to keep cardholder data safe from theft or tampering. A "PCI compliant" credit card terminal is designed so that cardholder data is not retained in the terminal after merchants submit their daily batches for payment from their processors. By July, 2010 no new merchants will be permitted to begin processing without utilizing a PCI compliant terminal.
Fortunately, the American National Standards Institute and Visa/Mastercard bank associations permit older non-compliant credit card machines to continue operating until the merchants decide to upgrade or the terminal simply fails due to age. In effect, older terminals are "grandfathered" so that PCI compliance standards can be implemented without major disruptions to your business.
